Major project achievements

  • Establishment and operationalization of SICOM as a technical arm of MoEF&CC.
  • Establishment and operationalization of world-class Institute- National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) at Anna University, Chennai, which aids in the better protection, conservation, rehabilitation, management and policy design of the coast. Working in collaboration with 14 identified Coastal Research Institutions, it engages in R&D on the integrated and sustainable management of coastal and marine areas in India and advises the Central and State/ Union Territory Governments and other associated stakeholders on policy, and scientific matters relating to ICZMP.
  • The first of its kind (largest ever in the World Bank Projects) comprehensive coastal aerial photography work, critical for the management of Indian Coastal areas is completed.
  • Sediment cell mapping and ESA mapping of the entire coast are completed.
  • Shoreline change map of the entire coast is completed.
  • 16500 ha mangroves plantation in Gujarat is completed with community involvement.
  • 70 MLD STP at Jamnagar-Gujarat is operational and around 5 lacs population of the city will get benefited.
  • Successful installation of GEO Tubes in Pentha village-Odisha to prevent coastal erosion to save the life and property of villagers.
  • 39 multipurpose cyclone shelters in Odisha and West Bengal is completed and put to use and handed over to Cyclone Shelter Management and Maintenance Committee which will prevent villagers from loss of life and livestock at the time of natural disaster and alternatively are being used for community halls, Anganwadi, SHG training centres, schools etc in normal days.
  • Establishment of Solid Waste Management at Paradeep-Odisha is under progress.
  • 100% electrification work in Sagar Island-West Bengal is completed. Completion of electricity distribution lines in entire areas of Sagar Island (covering about 35000 households) is one of the landmark achievement to not only improve the life of coastal communities (about 25000 people) but also achieving significant CHG emission reductions by eliminating diesel generators in the island.
  • Beach Beautification and hawker’s rehabilitation activities in Digha, West Bengal completed.
  • Preparation of ICZM Plans on a pilot mode for Gujarat, Odisha and West Bengal towards a scientific data based and multi-stakeholder management strategy for the identified coastal stretches for 20-25 years.
  • Alternative livelihood activities through SHGs, coastal communities, CBOs carried out across select stretches of three pilot states – Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal.
  • ICZMP finds a significant mention as a vital strategy in India’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution commitments during COP22.
